Rabbi Abraham and Pastor Johnson will be co-teaching a class based on the acclaimed book The Bible With and Without Jesus: How Jews and Christians Read the Same Stories Differently by Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Zvi Brettler. The class will explore how Jews and Christians read many of the same biblical texts—from the Bible, the Prophets and the Psalms—through very different lenses. Together we’ll look at passages such as the creation narrative in Genesis, the story of Adam and Eve, the Suffering Servant in Isaiah, the book of Jonah and Psalm 22, discovering what these texts meant in their original contexts and how each tradition has understood them over time.
The class will be offered on Monday evenings in St. Luke’s Great Room at 6:00pm and Thursday mornings at Beth El Synagogue (14506 California Street) at 10:30am. Both sessions cover the same material, so choose whichever time works best for you.
