Book for this study: My Body is Not a Prayer Request (Disability Justice in the Church) by Amy Kenny
Kristi Starmer will lead this book study which will meet via Zoom on Thursdays, February 23-March 23 (5 weeks) at 7:00 p.m. Zoom ID 833 0749 4741
Much of the church has forgotten that we worship a disabled God whose wounds survived resurrection, says Amy Kenny. It is time for the church to start treating disabled people as full members of the body of Christ who have much more to offer than a miraculous cure narrative and to learn from their embodied experiences.
Written by a disabled Christian, this book shows that the church is missing out on the prophetic witness and blessing of disability. Kenny reflects on her experiences inside the church to expose unintentional ableism and cast a new vision for Christian communities to engage disability justice. She shows that until we cultivate church spaces where people with disabilities can fully belong, flourish, and lead, we are not valuing the diverse members of the body of Christ.
If you plan to participate in this study, please RSVP to the Church Office at churchoffice@stlukeumc.com or 402-333-6886 ext. 300.
The book is available on Amazon and will be helpful for people to purchase and read as we progress through the 5-week study.
Adults and youth, show your pride in your church and come help us spruce up the St. Luke grounds for Easter and spring!
This year we are having two clean-up days. The first one will be before Easter so we can focus on getting the front lawn ready for the Easter Egg Hunt. The second one will be more of a “regular” clean-up day to do other needed grounds projects.
The Clean-Up Days are Saturdays, March 25 and April 29, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. On these days just show up either at the garage (lower level) or bell tower doors (upper level). If you can’t stay for the whole time, please come for whatever period of time you can give.
Bring your favorite hand and yard tools, including work gloves, rakes, tarps, leaf blowers, trimmers, wheelbarrows, etc.
